Tomb Raider Collector's Edition

PLAYSTATION 3
Tomb Raider Collector's Edition
Square Enix3/5/2013REGION 2

This is the one that put a Play Arts Kai figure in the box and made every shelf in your gaming room a little more dangerous. The Tomb Raider Collector's Edition on Playstation 3 is the full-fat premium package for the 2013 reboot, and it came loaded. That Play Arts Kai Lara Croft figurine is the centerpiece, a detailed, fully articulated rendition of the rebooted survivor that still holds its own next to modern collectible figures.

But the rest of the package doesn't slouch either. A 15" x 19" double-sided island map and poster gives you Yamatai in all its cursed glory. The artbook walks you through the visual redesign that turned Lara from a polygon pinup into something far more compelling.

The survival pouch is one of those era-specific physical goods that publishers don't bother with anymore, a tangible, in-universe piece that actually feels like something Lara would carry. Throw in a CD soundtrack and a weapons pack DLC, and you've got a collector's edition that checked every box the PS3 generation demanded. We were deep in the disc-based golden age here, when physical media still meant something and publishers competed on shelf presence.

This edition won that war for Tomb Raider. The Play Arts Kai figure alone has become a collector's market staple, and finding this complete with all inserts is getting harder every year. If you're building a definitive PS3 collection, this is required reading.
