Dead Island Special Edition
Deep Silver9/6/2011Americas

A tropical paradise full of reanimated corpses, and we got the VIP package. The Dead Island Special Edition on PlayStation 3 arrived with exclusive cover art and a bundle of content that turned an already chaotic zombie vacation into something far more unhinged. For PS3 collectors who remember the hype around that infamous cinematic trailer, this is the edition that matched the moment.

The headliner is The Ripper, an exclusive in-game weapon that fuses a baseball bat with a buzz saw. It's exactly as ridiculous and effective as it sounds. The Bloodbath Arena DLC rounds out the package with four trap-laden arenas, endless zombie waves, and co-op multiplayer support, plus everything you earn carries back into the main campaign. A Sonic Pulse Grenade tops it off for good measure.

In the US, this Special Edition was a GameStop exclusive, which means the pool of surviving copies is tied to a single retail channel from the disc-based era. The PS3 generation was peak physical edition culture, when publishers still gave us tangible reasons to choose one retailer over another. Dead Island's cultural footprint, that trailer, the divisive reception, the cult following that emerged after, makes this a fascinating shelf piece from a very specific moment in gaming history. The alternate cover art alone sets it apart from standard copies at a glance. For zombie game collectors and PS3 completionists, this one belongs in the collection.
