Ultracore (PS5)

Digital Illusions built this run-and-gun beast in the early '90s, shelved it before release, and accidentally created one of gaming's most persistent myths. Ultracore for PlayStation 5 is a Strictly Limited Games exclusive, individually numbered and limited to 1,300 copies worldwide. Originally titled "Hardcore," this is a game that technically didn't exist for 25 years, now available on a PS5 disc with manual included.

The gameplay is pure '90s side-scrolling aggression. Massive levels, responsive controls, a weapon arsenal that keeps expanding, and enemy encounters designed to test reflexes rather than patience. Digital Illusions would go on to create Battlefield, but Ultracore represents their roots, a time when a small Swedish studio was pouring everything into making a Mega Drive cartridge that could stand alongside Contra and Gunstar Heroes. That it was denied release makes finally playing it feel like unearthing buried treasure.

This standard numbered edition is straightforward. The game, a manual, and the knowledge that you're one of 1,300 people worldwide holding a physical copy of something that spent a quarter century as vapor. No elaborate extras needed when the game's own history provides all the collector narrative you could ask for.
