Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Special Edition
EA2/7/2012Americas

Two thousand copies. All platforms combined. That number alone should have your attention. The Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Special Edition on Playstation 3 was only available through pre-order on the official online store, and it came loaded. Inside the sealed cardboard box you'll find the game, a parchment map of the Faelands, a seven-piece dice set with dice bag, a full set of 40 Destiny Cards, the game's soundtrack, and a Fate-Touched Weapons Pack DLC code.

Kingdoms of Amalur was the RPG that had no business being as good as it was. Built by a dream team of Todd McFarlane, R.A. Salvatore, and Ken Rolston, it delivered an open-world action RPG with combat that put many bigger franchises to shame. The studio's fate was tragic, but the game itself remains a gem.

The physical contents here read like a tabletop RPG starter kit, and that's entirely the point. Amalur's world was designed with deep lore in mind, and the dice set, Destiny Cards, and parchment map bring that world off the screen and into your hands. The soundtrack preserves the game's sweeping orchestral score in physical form.

With only 2,000 units split across platforms, the PS3 allocation was tiny. Finding one sealed is a genuine collector's achievement. This is the kind of edition where every piece tells you the developers cared about the world they built, and wanted us to hold a piece of it.
