Final Fantasy VIII Collectors Limited Edition

The Final Fantasy VIII Collectors Limited Edition is the pre-CE-era European grail that fans still hunt 25 years later. Released only in PAL territories alongside the PS1 launch of FF VIII, this cardboard long-box set packs the game with a memory card sticker sheet, a Squall T-shirt, and a double-sided poster, in the kind of packaging Squaresoft hardly ever produced for the Western market.
Final Fantasy VIII was the bold sequel. Squall, Rinoa, the Junction system, the GFs, the Triple Triad obsession that ate weekend after weekend. The first FF where the cast looked like real people. The opening cinematic that everyone remembers frame for frame. We argue about it. We still finish it.
The cardboard long-box is the bonus that makes this set historic. Long-boxes were already a dying format by 1999, the last hold-over from PC software packaging. The FF VIII Limited Edition is one of the last major European releases to use the format, which makes it a piece of physical media history beyond just being a CE.
PAL exclusive. Like Ridge Racer Type 4's European edition, this was a Western collector grail before the term collector's edition was even standard industry language. Sealed copies are appreciating year over year. For Final Fantasy historians, for PAL collectors, for anyone tracing the lineage of how CEs became the standard format, this is the missing chapter.
