P-47 II (Genesis/Mega Drive)

A canceled Mega Drive game, fully restored and finally released for the first time. P-47 II for Genesis and Mega Drive is the kind of collector's story that makes this hobby endlessly fascinating. Originally planned as P-47 II: The Freedom Star for the Japanese Mega Drive, this shoot-em-up was shown at events but never saw a retail release. Decades later, Retro-Bit has brought it back from the dead with updated polish, a new sound test mode, refined graphics, and compatibility with both NTSC Genesis and PAL Mega Drive consoles.
The game itself is a World War II aerial shooter where you pilot a P-47 Thunderbolt across European and Pacific fronts, taking on bosses like the battleship Yamato and the airborne carrier Akagi. Multi-layered scrolling backgrounds, weapon power-ups, and a screen-clearing Hyper-attack give it the kind of arcade intensity that Jaleco was known for in its prime. This isn't a ROM dump. It's a lovingly updated version with visual improvements that respect the source material.
The packaging tells its own story. New box art by Tankro Kato, the illustrator famous for his Hasegawa plastic model kit artwork, gives this release an identity completely its own. Inside you'll find a Phantom Fighter cartridge, an 8mm CD of the original P-47 II MD soundtrack, a full-color instruction manual, a reversible cartridge inlay sleeve, and an individually numbered commemorative slipcover.
For shmup collectors, this is a genuine piece of recovered history. A game that was all but forgotten, now preserved in physical form on the hardware it was always meant to run on. That's not just a collectible. That's a rescue mission.
