Call of Duty Black Ops Prestige Edition
Treyarch put a functional spy vehicle in a video game box and somehow that wasn't even the weirdest thing about 2010. The Call of Duty Black Ops Prestige Edition on Xbox 360 is one of the most ambitious collector's editions ever produced, built around the RC-XD Video Surveillance Vehicle, a real, working RC car modeled after the in-game killstreak reward. This thing has a wireless video camera, a microphone, independent suspension, digital proportional steering, and a custom pistol-grip transmitter with a 2-inch backlit color screen that receives live video from the car.
The control range hits 200 feet. It even has high and low speed settings. This wasn't a toy thrown into a box as an afterthought.
It was a fully engineered piece of hardware that just happened to come with one of the best-selling games of the generation. The display stand keeps it presentable when it's not roaming your hallway, and the transmitter itself looks like something pulled from a Cold War equipment locker. For 360-era collectors, the Prestige Edition represents peak physical ambition from a publisher willing to spend real money on the collector's experience.
Finding one complete with a functioning vehicle is the challenge, and it's a challenge worth taking on.
