Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition

Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition on Playstation 3 is the definitive version of Capcom's co-op survival horror blockbuster, and it earned that title by packing in the DLC chapters that transformed the original release. Lost in Nightmares alone justifies the existence of this edition. It sends Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine back to the Spencer Mansion, threading a direct line to the original Resident Evil in a way that had longtime fans losing their composure. The puzzles, the atmosphere, the callbacks. It was fan service done right.

Desperate Escape rounds out the package with a high-octane scenario starring Jill and BSAA agent Josh Stone, fighting through relentless enemy waves in a chapter that plays more like an action movie climax than a standard DLC add-on. Together, these two episodes represent some of the best supplementary content the PS3 era produced, and having them on-disc rather than as a separate download gives this edition a completeness that the original launch copy simply doesn't have.

The PS3 era was when Resident Evil was still figuring out the balance between horror and action, and RE5 Gold Edition captures that tension perfectly. For collectors building a complete Resident Evil library, the Gold Edition is the only version of RE5 that belongs on the shelf. It's the full picture, packaged the way it should have been from the start.
