Sometimes the most collectible version of a game exists because a retailer got nervous. The Catherine Alternative Cover on Xbox 360 is identical to the standard release in every way except the front art. The original Japanese cover shows Vincent crawling up Katherine's body. The alternative version zooms in on Katherine's face, a concession to retailers who found the original too provocative for their shelves.

Atlus made it clear from the start that this variant would be the minority print. Sales and PR Manager Aram Jabbari confirmed that the vast majority of copies would carry the original Japanese artwork, with only a small percentage featuring the toned-down alternative. That deliberate scarcity, built into the manufacturing run from day one, is the kind of detail that makes collectors pay attention. This isn't a variant that became rare by accident. It was designed to be uncommon.

Limited to the USA NTSC region, the Alternative Cover sits in a strange collecting space: it's the "censored" version, which normally carries less appeal, but its confirmed small print run flips that equation entirely. Rarity trumps everything in this hobby, and a variant that Atlus themselves said would be hard to find has only gotten harder to find over time.

Pre-ordering either version got you a Sound Disc and Art Book, adding another layer for completionists to track. But the Alternative Cover copy, sealed and in clean condition, is the one collectors circle when it surfaces. It's proof that sometimes the version nobody asked for becomes the version everyone wants.
