WWE '12 The People's Edition

PLAYSTATION 3
WWE '12 The People's Edition

The People chose, and The People chose correctly. WWE '12 The People's Edition on Playstation 3 exists because THQ ran a Facebook vote to let fans decide the cover star and theme of this special edition, and The Rock won over John Cena. Democracy in action, wrestling style.

Inside the standard game case with its foil sleeve cover featuring The Rock, you'll find a DLC code to play as The Great One himself, a WWE Blu-ray featuring matches from "Greatest Superstars of the 21st Century," an exclusive foil Topps Trading Card of The Rock, and an art image to complete the package. Note that the PS3 version specifically includes a Blu-ray disc for the bonus matches, a format upgrade over the Xbox 360's DVD version.

WWE '12 revamped the franchise's gameplay engine with the Predator Technology system, making it the most fluid wrestling game THQ had produced up to that point. The Rock's involvement as the edition's centerpiece came at the perfect time, right as he was returning to WWE programming and building toward his WrestleMania match with John Cena.

The People's Edition was exclusive to Play.com in the UK, which immediately limits its reach. Play.com itself shut down years ago, making this a retail-exclusive from a retailer that no longer exists. The foil Topps card and Blu-ray are the kind of physical extras that separate serious wrestling game collectors from casual buyers. For anyone building a WWE gaming collection, The People's Edition captures a specific cultural moment when The Rock's return electrified everything he touched.
