The Darkness II Limited Edition
2K Games2/10/2012REGION 2

Before the disc-less future swallowed everything whole, PS3 limited editions had to earn their shelf space with what was inside. The Darkness II Limited Edition on Playstation 3 understood the assignment. It paired one of the generation's most stylish shooters with a bundle of extras that leaned into its comic book DNA harder than most licensed games ever dared.

The standout piece is the custom illustration by Marc Silvestri. For the uninitiated, Silvestri is the co-founder of Top Cow and one of the defining artists behind The Darkness comics. His work in this package isn't filler. It's an artifact that connects the game directly to the mythology it's built on. Digital downloads of The Darkness Origins Volume 1 and Volume 2 comics deepen that connection, offering the full backstory of Jackie Estacado's curse for anyone willing to read between firefights.

The in-game bonuses are well-chosen too. The "Crazy Abdul" alternate darkling outfit gives your demonic companion a fresh look, while Gourmet Hearts and Relic Hunter add gameplay hooks for the obsessive among us. Gourmet Hearts makes devouring enemy hearts more rewarding, and Relic Hunter points you toward collectibles you'd otherwise miss. None of it is essential, and that's the point. These are collector-tier touches, extras that exist because someone at 2K knew a certain kind of player would appreciate them. If your PS3 library skews toward the overlooked and undervalued, this belongs in it.
