Best Buy knew what Final Fantasy fans wanted, and they delivered a novella to prove it. The Final Fantasy XIII-2 Novella Edition on Playstation 3 came packaged in an artbox with the standard game and a hardcover copy of Final Fantasy XIII Episode 1, extending the story beyond what the game itself could tell.

This was the version waiting for every US and Canadian pre-order and launch day buyer at Best Buy stores. That wide availability makes it more accessible than the Collector's Edition, but the hardcover novella gives it something no other version offers: narrative depth in physical form. Final Fantasy XIII's storytelling was divisive, and this novella provided context and character development that the game's critics often said was missing. Holding the actual book alongside the game feels like getting both sides of the conversation.

The artbox elevates the standard packaging into something with genuine shelf presence. It's larger, more visually distinct, and immediately communicates that this isn't just another copy of the game. For a franchise where lore runs deep and fans debate every plot point, including a hardcover novel was a smart, fan-focused decision.

The Novella Edition occupies a sweet spot for PS3 Final Fantasy collectors. It's findable enough that building a complete set is realistic, but distinctive enough that it stands apart from the millions of standard copies that flooded the market. If you're the kind of collector who values the story as much as the gameplay, this is your version.
