Disgaea D2 (Limited Edition)

PLAYSTATION 3
Disgaea D2 (Limited Edition)
Nippon Ichi Software3/20/2013REGION 2

A sequel that went back to the very beginning, reuniting the Netherworld's original trio in a way that made every Disgaea fan's demon heart sing. The Disgaea D2 Limited Edition on Playstation 3 packages that reunion with the kind of extras that Nippon Ichi knows their audience craves. This is the Japanese release, and it delivers where it counts.

The star attractions here are the Niitengo Etna and Flonne figures, a two-piece chibi set that captures both characters with the kind of exaggerated charm the series is built on. They're small, they're adorable, and they look right at home next to your Prinnies. Alongside the figures sits a gorgeous hardcover art book stuffed with design materials and character illustrations, the kind of deep-dive reference piece that actually rewards repeat flipping.

Then there's the two-disc original soundtrack composed by Tenpei Sato, whose work on this series has become as iconic as the games themselves. Two full discs of Netherworld orchestration that holds up outside the game just as well as in it. For collectors who've been with Laharl's crew since the PS2 days, this Limited Edition is a love letter.

The figures alone have become increasingly difficult to track down as a complete set, and that hardcover art book puts most standard pack-in booklets to shame. If your shelf already has a Disgaea section, this belongs there. If it doesn't, this is a solid reason to start one.
