Demon's Souls Deluxe Edition

PLAYSTATION 3
Demon's Souls Deluxe Edition

Before FromSoftware became a household name, Atlus packaged their brutality with a strategy guide you'd actually need. The Demon's Souls Deluxe Edition on Playstation 3 arrives in a cardboard artbox containing the standard game and the official full-length strategy guide, a combination that feels almost prophetic given how impenetrable this game was for first-time players. This is the one that started the Souls phenomenon.

Every punishing boss, every cryptic NPC quest, every "YOU DIED" screen traces its lineage back to this PS3 exclusive, and the Deluxe Edition acknowledged from day one that you were going to need help. The strategy guide has its own collector's story. A printing defect affected some covers due to an ink problem, prompting Atlus to run a replacement program where you'd literally rip off your guide's cover and mail it in.

Rumor has it the defect was caught before launch, leading to minimal initial shipments limited to pre-order fulfillment. That production hiccup makes complete Deluxe Editions with intact, non-defective guide covers genuinely uncommon. Pre-order buyers received a soft-cover art book and full soundtrack CD on top of everything else, making the complete pre-order Deluxe bundle one of the PS3 era's most generous packages.

Demon's Souls has only grown in stature since 2009, and this Deluxe Edition represents the ground floor of a legacy that reshaped the entire industry. Collectors who were there at the beginning know exactly what this box means.
