Defiance Limited Edition
A game that fused MMO shooting with a live TV show on Syfy. That happened. The Defiance Limited Edition on PlayStation 3 shipped with the Volter Shotgun and 500 Bits of in-game currency, a lean pair of digital extras for a game that was trying to do something genuinely unprecedented.
Defiance launched in 2013 as a shared-world shooter where events in the game directly influenced the companion television series, and vice versa. It was wildly ambitious, occasionally janky, and unlike anything else on the PS3. The Volter Shotgun gave Limited Edition owners an early-game advantage in a world overrun with mutants, aliens, and ark-fall debris raining from the sky.
The 500 Bits of in-game currency provided a head start on gear and customization. Here's the thing that makes any Defiance physical edition interesting now: the game's servers were shut down in 2021, and its Syfy show ended in 2015. Every copy of Defiance is now a time capsule of a media experiment that will never be repeated.
The game disc itself is essentially a monument to a specific moment when television and gaming tried to merge in real time. The Limited Edition's extras may have been digital and server-dependent, but the physical disc and its place in gaming history are permanent. For collectors who document the strange corners of the PS3 library, Defiance belongs on the shelf as a conversation piece if nothing else.
