Japanese RPGs on the PS3 had a certain defiant energy, and Agarest brought that energy in spades. The Agarest: Generations of War Zero Collector's Edition on Playstation 3 is a niche collector's piece built for the audience that actually cares about tactical JRPGs with multigenerational storylines. It ships with the Blu-ray game featuring a double-sided inlay and color manual, an A3 double-sided poster, the original soundtrack, and three 3D lenticular art cards.

That A3 poster deserves attention. One side shows the raw concept drawing of the inlay artwork, the other displays the finished colored version. Seeing both stages of the same illustration side by side is a quiet masterclass in how game art evolves from sketch to final product. It's the kind of inclusion that respects the artistic process rather than just packaging the end result.

The original soundtrack is a welcome addition for a game whose music carries much of the emotional weight across its sprawling narrative. Having it on physical media means it survives platform shutdowns and digital delistings, which matters more every year. The three 3D lenticular art cards add tactile display value, shifting and catching light in a way that flat prints simply don't.

Agarest: Generations of War Zero wasn't a mainstream blockbuster, and this collector's edition wasn't designed for a mainstream audience. It was made for us, the subset of collectors who track down niche JRPGs and give them the shelf space they've earned. The color manual alone is a relic from a time when publishers still bothered to print them. This is a compact, thoughtful package that punches well above its profile.
