The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D (First Edition)

Pre-order exclusives from 2011 hit different. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D First Edition on 3DS came with something collectors still talk about: a sealed bonus case featuring alternative gold-colored cover art, plus a poster. The game itself is identical to the standard release, but that gold case changes the entire equation.

Europe got this one through pre-order only, released in June 2011 when the 3DS was still finding its footing. Ocarina of Time 3D was the system seller Nintendo needed, a full remake of arguably the most important game ever made, rebuilt for stereoscopic 3D. The First Edition acknowledged that the people willing to commit early deserved something special.

The sealed gold case is the detail that matters most. It wasn't meant to be opened and used. It was meant to be displayed. An alternate-universe version of the game's packaging rendered in that unmistakable Zelda gold, sealed and preserved as a collector's artifact from day one. Nintendo essentially told you, "This one's for the shelf." Combined with the poster, the First Edition created a small but meaningful upgrade over the standard release.

What makes this particularly interesting for collectors is how it compares to the Ocarina Edition with its playable instrument. This First Edition is quieter, more understated. It's for the collector who values variant packaging and gold-label presentation over novelty items. Both are worthy additions to a Zelda collection, but the First Edition speaks to a different instinct entirely. The instinct to preserve, to keep sealed, to admire from a respectful distance.
