Steel Battalion (First Edition)
Capcom3/28/2003Europe

This is the holy grail of peripheral-based gaming, and it isn't even close. The Steel Battalion First Edition for Xbox comes in an enormous cardboard box designed to look like an ammo container, housing the game alongside its legendary 40-button controller complete with foot pedals. Nothing before or since has matched the sheer audacity of this package.

Steel Battalion asked you to pilot a mech the hard way. No simplified controls, no accessibility concessions. You sat down in front of a dual-stick, triple-pedal, 40-button monstrosity and you learned to operate a vertical tank or you ejected. The controller is the game, and the game is the controller. They're inseparable in a way that no other title in gaming history has replicated.

The First Edition is distinguished from the later re-release by the green buttons on the controller, compared to the blue buttons on subsequent production runs. There are also subtle differences in the finish on the button panels and the style of the foot pedals. These details matter to collectors because they mark the difference between the original limited run and the version that was reissued alongside the sequel, Steel Battalion: Line of Contact.

Production was genuinely limited. The First Edition was the only version available before manufacturing stopped entirely, and finding one with the original green-button controller, the ammo crate box, and everything intact is a serious endeavor. The sheer size of the package means storage has always been an issue, which led to boxes getting damaged or discarded.

If you have the space and the dedication, a complete First Edition Steel Battalion is the centerpiece of any Xbox collection. Full stop.
