Japanese bullet hell shooters on a Western console always felt like contraband, and this one came dressed for the occasion. The DeathSmiles Limited Edition for Xbox 360 packages Cave's gothic-lolita side-scrolling shooter in Limited Edition packaging with a soundtrack CD and an Xbox 360 faceplate. If you collected during the 360 era, you remember faceplates.

Microsoft's modular dream that died quietly, making surviving ones genuinely uncommon display pieces. The soundtrack CD is a standout inclusion. Cave's audio work on DeathSmiles is the kind of frenetic, layered composition that holds up outside the game, and having it on physical media gives it permanence.

The game itself occupies a strange and wonderful corner of the 360 library. It was one of the few arcade-style shmups to get a proper retail release in the West, and the Limited Edition treatment elevated it beyond a standard disc-in-a-case affair. For shoot-em-up collectors, this sits in a very specific sweet spot.

It's niche enough to avoid mass production, beloved enough to maintain demand, and weird enough to spark a conversation every time someone spots it on your shelf. The faceplate alone is a time capsule from a console generation that tried things nobody would attempt today. That's exactly why we keep it.
