The edition everyone got but nobody planned for. The Assassin's Creed III Signature Edition for Xbox 360 was the default version for anyone who pre-ordered or bought the game on day one through select retailers. It came in a standard plastic case with bonus DLC, making it the first-edition equivalent for Ubisoft's colonial adventure.

What makes this one interesting for collectors is the variation. GameStop, Target, and Walmart each received their own branded versions with slightly different DLC content. The GameStop Edition, Target Edition, and Walmart Edition created a fragmented landscape of retailer-specific variants that most buyers never even noticed at the time. Years later, those differences matter to completionists trying to catalog every version.

Assassin's Creed III took the franchise to Revolutionary War-era America and handed us Connor, a new assassin with a tomahawk and a grudge. The game pushed the series forward with naval combat, frontier exploration, and a scope that felt genuinely ambitious for its time. Love it or debate it, ACIII was a milestone for the franchise.

The Signature Edition occupies a unique spot in collecting. It's common enough that finding one isn't difficult, but the retailer-specific variants create a completionist challenge that rewards the dedicated. A sealed GameStop Edition next to a sealed Target Edition next to a sealed Walmart Edition tells a story about how games were sold during the disc-based era. That story gets more interesting every year as physical retail continues to shrink. For Xbox 360 collectors, the full Signature Edition set is a snapshot of a distribution model we'll never see again.
